Suriname’s Wooden Cathedral: America’s Most Impressive

The Cathedral of Paramaribo: A Wooden Jewel in the Heart of Suriname

Did you know that in the capital of Suriname you can find one of the most impressive wooden cathedrals in the world? We are talking about the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, a symbol of faith, history, and architecture that you cannot miss if you visit Paramaribo.

A Giant Built of Cedar

Imagine an imposing temple, but instead of stone, it is built almost entirely with precious woods from the Amazon jungle! Using mainly cedar and other local hardwoods, this cathedral is the largest of its kind in South America and the Caribbean.

A Bit of History

Its history is fascinating. It was built between 1883 and 1885 on the site where a theater once stood. The Catholic community was growing and needed a larger space. The result was this marvel that perfectly combines Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic styles. The two towers that dominate the city skyline were completed in 1901.

A Sensory Experience

Upon entering, your eyes will not be the only ones amazed. The aroma of the red cedar will completely envelop you, creating a warm, solemn atmosphere deeply connected to the nature of Suriname. The interior, with its columns, arches, and carved capitals, will transport you to another era.

From Cathedral to Basilica

This temple is so special that in 2014 it received the title of Minor Basilica, being the fifth to receive this distinction in the entire Caribbean region. A true recognition of the faith and history of the Surinamese people.

A Place of Pilgrimage

Inside rest the remains of Father Peter Donders, a missionary who dedicated his life to caring for the sick. This makes the cathedral an important pilgrimage site for those visiting the country.

Rescued from Oblivion

At the end of the 20th century, the cathedral suffered severe deterioration from termites and the weather, even being closed for over 20 years. Thanks to an extensive restoration, since 2010 it has once again shone in its original splendor, with its façade painted in vibrant yellow and blueish-gray that contrasts with the city's greenery.

If you plan to visit it:

  • Location: In the heart of the historic center of Paramaribo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Hours: It generally opens Monday through Friday in the mornings and afternoons, and on Saturdays and Sundays with special hours for masses.

Without a doubt, the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul is a reflection of the soul of Suriname: warm, diverse, resilient, and of a unique beauty. Would you like to visit it?

From Data Castaways to Architects of Wisdom

From Data Castaways to Architects of Wisdom

There is a recurring anecdote among systems architects: the internet was built to connect computers, but we forgot that the ultimate purpose was to connect minds. In the sea of data we navigate today, the average user feels like a castaway surrounded by saltwater: there is abundance everywhere, but nothing to quench the thirst for real understanding. At news.emandatum.com, we were born with the premise that a news story should not be an ephemeral event that dies with a scroll, but a seed that, when connected with others, flourishes into actionable knowledge.

Our vision transcends the traditional model of digital media. We do not aspire to be just another printing press spitting out headlines to feed an attention algorithm; we aspire to be the map and the compass. We understand that information without context is merely noise, which is why we are transforming our platform into a Living Knowledge Network. This concept is based on the idea that every article, analysis, or report is a node that intertwines with others to form an ecosystem where the reader doesn't just learn what is happening, but understands why it is happening and what impact it will have on their future.

Currently, our development labs are buzzing with projects that challenge the status quo. One of our most ambitious pillars is the implementation of Dynamic Thematic Nodes, an architecture that organizes information by its structural relevance rather than just its chronological freshness. Imagine clicking on a story about Artificial Intelligence and, instead of seeing random related notes, finding a common thread that guides you from ethical foundations to the commercial applications of tomorrow. To this, we add Emandatum Insights, our deep-analysis arm where experts and technology collaborate to break down the trends that will truly move the needle for industry and society.

But this is only the prologue to our story. The next steps on our roadmap are designed to return power to the reader through Purposeful Adaptive Personalization. We are not talking about locking you in an "echo chamber" that only shows you what you want to read, but an intelligent system that identifies your areas of interest and challenges you with complementary perspectives, fostering genuine critical thinking. We are integrating hybrid formats where audio, data visualization, and text converge to adapt to your lifestyle, ensuring that knowledge is always within reach, without friction.

The path toward a more informed society is not traveled alone. At news.emandatum.com, we are building the infrastructure, but the energy flowing through these cables is your curiosity. We are convinced that knowledge is not a private possession, but a collective fabric that grows stronger with every connection. We invite you to stop being a spectator of informational chaos and become an active node in this revolution. The future isn't read—it’s connected.

Grand Chancellor Steve Ramirez, UNASDG Envoy

Grand Chancellor Steve Ramirez, UNASDG Envoy

Steve Ramirez is appointed Grand Chancellor of Mandatum before the UNASDG intergovernmental organization, to turn international cooperation into concrete projects.

Mandatum, the ORDO SUPREMUS PRO CAUSIS HUMANITARIIS, has appointed Steve Ramirez as its Grand Chancellor before the UNASDG intergovernmental organization. In this role he becomes the Order's link with this international body, with a clear mission: to turn diplomatic agreements into concrete projects for the communities that need them most.

Steve Ramirez, Grand Chancellor of Mandatum

A life shaped by diplomacy

Ramirez comes from a family of diplomats. Growing up in that environment, he learned early the value of dialogue, protocol and patience in building agreements between nations, and how much careful listening matters when different interests have to find common ground.

That background gives him a natural understanding of how governments and international institutions work, and of the respect that every negotiation demands. It is an experience that cannot be learned from books alone, and one that will be decisive in his new responsibilities.

Alongside this diplomatic background, Steve Ramirez holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology. His scientific training gives him a rigorous, evidence-based way of working, valuable in a role that must assess projects affecting the health, the environment and the daily life of communities.

A voice in several languages

Steve Ramirez is bilingual: English is his mother tongue, and he has a perfect command of Spanish. He can also communicate in Catalan and Italian. This ability allows him to move with ease between cultures and to speak directly with authorities, partners and communities in their own language.

For a role that connects the Order with governments and institutions on several continents, this is an essential asset. Speaking the language of the other is the first step toward understanding them, and toward building relationships based on trust.

At the head of the Chancellery

As Grand Chancellor, Steve Ramirez leads the Chancellery of Mandatum, the body responsible for the Order's institutional and diplomatic relations. From this position he represents the Order before the UNASDG intergovernmental organization and before the authorities and institutions with which Mandatum works.

The Chancellery coordinates the work of the Order's Chancellors and Deputy Chancellors in each country. The Chancellors lead the institutional dialogue with the authorities, while the Deputy Chancellors work on the ground with the communities, so that Mandatum's projects are understood and embraced by the people they are meant to serve. The Grand Chancellor brings this network together, makes sure it speaks with one voice, and ensures that every agreement is carried out with integrity and respect for local culture.

His upbringing in a family of diplomats and his command of languages are especially valuable in this work. The Chancellery is, above all, a place of dialogue, where trust is built one conversation at a time.

An honor for the Order

For Mandatum, it is an honor to count on Steve Ramirez as Grand Chancellor. With his diplomatic background, his command of languages and his commitment to service, the Order's international cooperation is in good hands.

Foundations of Dignity: A New Era of Cooperation in Suriname

From the Mandatum Communication Procuracy

The formalization of the agreement between the Republic of Suriname and Ordo Supremus Pro Causis Humanitariis (Mandatum) represents more than just the launch of an ambitious infrastructure plan; it marks the birth of a new paradigm in international cooperation based on dignity, transparency, and sustainability. This step is a testament to our firm commitment to addressing one of the region’s most critical needs: access to decent and affordable housing for the workforce and the fundamental sectors of society.

More Than Walls: The Concept of Community

Our mission in Suriname transcends the physical construction of housing units. We have set out to create "Model Neighborhoods": integrated communities where safety, aesthetics, and social cohesion are not distant aspirations, but the daily standard of living.

This project is built upon non-negotiable strategic pillars:

  • Fiscal Independence and Neutrality: Under this principle, the initiative will be executed without generating sovereign debt or guarantee obligations for the host State. We are demonstrating that it is possible to transform social realities through international financing sources and high-efficiency management that does not compromise the public treasury.
  • Integral Sustainability: Every home will serve as a testament to our commitment to sustainable development, integrating energy-efficient designs, renewable energy use, and resource management systems that ensure low ecological impact and reduced operating costs for resident families.
  • Protection of the Humanitarian Legacy: As a Sovereign Order, we safeguard our identity and principles. The right to nomenclature and the protection of our reputation ensure that the Mandatum name remains forever linked to the highest standards of excellence and humanitarian ethics.

Institutional Commitment

Through our unique structure—which combines the transparency of a modern organization with the stability of a Sovereign Order—we offer Suriname a partnership free from external political or commercial pressures. At Mandatum, we do not just build structures; we forge the stage where thousands of families can, at last, thrive in an environment of peace and social stability.

The ratification of this agreement by the Minister of Regional Development, Miquella Huur, our Grand Knight, Daniel Tusian, and the Procurator for Government Liaison, Alfred Michael Glenn Williams, marks the beginning of a journey that will serve as a beacon for future interventions for the benefit of humanity.

Mandatum and the Government of Suriname Seal Strategic Alliance for the Construction of 10,000 Sustainable Homes

In a historic step for the expansion of the Order's humanitarian missions in the region, Ordo Supremus Pro Causis Humanitariis (Mandatum) has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Suriname for the comprehensive development of the "Affordable Housing Initiative."

This agreement establishes the collaborative framework for the design, financing, and management of a large-scale housing project, designed to alleviate the housing shortage affecting the workforce, essential services personnel, and the working middle class of the country.

Key Pillars of the Project

  • Housing Scope: Construction and administration of 10,000 housing units under a subsidized rental model.
  • Fiscal Neutrality: The project will be executed without generating sovereign debt or requiring capital from the Surinamese State, utilizing international funds channeled through urban development investment structures.
  • "Model Neighborhood" Framework: Mandatum will maintain long-term management to ensure communities characterized by safety, order, and high-quality infrastructure.
  • Sustainability and SDGs: The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, integrating energy efficiency, the use of renewable energies, and climate change adaptation.

Official Ratification

The document was ratified by the Minister of Regional Development of Suriname, Miquella Huur, and by our Grand Knight, Daniel Tusian. Furthermore, the process was validated by Alfred Michael Glenn Williams, Procurator for Government Liaison.

This collaboration seeks not only to raise structures but to forge vibrant, self-sufficient communities that serve as a model of progress for Suriname and the region.
